SPE 2006 - Symposium Topics

Main Theme: "The Poem / The Picture":
A Dialogue Between Poetry and Painting

Poets have had a creative dialogue with painting and plastic arts since ancient times. Baudelaire has pointed out that modern artistic expressions tend to complement and share new power among each other. Established in the ancient saying ut pictura poiesis, the interest in the interaction between poetry and painting has reached its climax in the past decade or so.

The 2006 symposium of the international Struga Poetry Evenings festival, "The Poem/The Picture": A Dialogue Between Poetry and Painting, has been envisioned as a dialogue between poets and painters or experts in theory and aesthetics. The papers and the discussions may refer to (but not be limited by) some of the following guidelines:

Guidelines:

  • Poetry in dialogue with painting
  • Poetic image vs. artistic picture
  • Description of artistic works in poetry (ecphrasis)
  • Paintings as illustrations of a poetic work
  • Transposition of pictures into poetic contexts
  • The poetic text as a re-creation of the painting
  • The poem as "reading/interpretation" of a painting
  • The poem as a "talking pucture"
  • Intermediary poetry as ars poetica/ars pictoria
  • The image of the artist (painter/sculptor/carver) in poetry
  • Stylistic analogies between poetic and artistic works
  • Creative exchange between poetry and painting
  • Rivalry/competition among the arts
  • The poem as an homage to a painter/painting
