The workshop is designed to be a rather relaxing work of poets-translators together with young translators (mostly language students - some of them poets themselves) and then present their work at a reading during the Festival.
During the course of the workshop, selected poems of Petko Dabeski, the holder of the 2004 "Miladinovci Brothers" prize, have been translated. Here you can read the translations, in the following languages:
Here are some more details about this workshop :
- the subject of the workshop will be translation of selected poems (15-20) of a famous Macedonian poet into 6 (six) foreign languages: English, German, Russian, French, Spanish (or Italian), and Hebrew. The name of the poet will be known at the end of June.
- the translators will be poets-participants who have already had experience in translation and who are willing to attend.
- the workshop will have two coordinators: both of them experienced translators Mrs. Margaret-Peggy Reid and Mr. Graham W. Reid, professors at the Sts. "Cyril and Methodius" University who have taught language and translation for more than 20 years. They are both British born and educated, but have spent most of their teaching career in Macedonia and are perfectly bilingual.
- the participants do not have to have knowledge of Macedonian, for there will be young translators / students (graduate or postgraduate) or young authors (or both) in all respective languages to work with them. However, English will serve as a lingua franca.
- we will certainly make sure that the Macedonian poet will make his/her presence during the workshop or, at best, be present at the workshop throughout the week.
- we are making efforts, as of now, to make sure that the venue of the workshop be in an isolated monastery complex by the Lake of Ohrid, 5km away from Struga. This complex also includes a marvelous hotel with its own beach, where the participants will stay during the workshop.
- the participants will work in two sessions: morning (up to two hours) and afternoon (up to two hours). The exact hours will be discussed and determined at the spot.
- after the conclusion of the workshop, the participants will join the Festival Programme and give a reading of their translations at an evening dedicated to the Macedonian poet.
- depending on how successful the translations are, we'll see to the possibility of their publication on the SPE's website and in a magazine.
